LUP carries out the preliminary investigation for the biotope type inventory for the wind power lines for the first time by combining aerial images and Sentinel 2a data

19.1.2017: The planned power lines from Wilster in Schleswig-Holstein to the Grafenrheinfeld area in Bavaria and from Brunsbüttel in Schleswig-Holstein to Großgartach in Baden-Württemberg will be built as underground cables in accordance with the legislative amendments of December 2015. The transmission system operators TenneT and TransnetBW are jointly responsible. The routes cross the federal states of Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Thuringia, Hesse, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

In an investigation area of approx. 4,200 km² along the planned route, LUP is carrying out the preliminary investigation of the biotope features on the basis of semi-automatic remote sensing methods. This is based on aerial photographs from various sources. Data from the new European earth observation satellite Sentinel 2a is also used in the process chain. Sentinel 2 is part of ESA’s European satellite programme COPERNICUS.

The use of Sentinel 2 is one of the first large-scale examples in the commercial planning sector in Germany. The LUP can thus significantly speed up the process and considerably improve the quality of the data collected. The processing time is set at approx. 4 months, and the results are the most important basis for further ecological analyses.
